Life is full of choices, and one of the most powerful choices we can make is to give back to our community.
Esmé van der Westhuizen, Lynette Scheepers, Leonie Bain, and Pinky Ngobeni have one thing in common – compassion and the willingness to serve.
They are a few examples of the many volunteers who generously give their time to Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services.
These amazing volunteers make it possible for the 5-star rated, non-profit, community-driven organization to continue meeting their patients’ physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and social needs from diagnosis to the end of life.
This group helps categorize and organize books, which we sell at an affordable price. They have become an integral part of the charity shop team.
Their dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. Like many other volunteers at Hospice, they give their time and energy for different reasons, and we will forever be grateful for their tireless contributions.
Esmé said: “I’ve been living in Alberton all my life; I’ve dropped into the store many times. I then realized that the book section needed some help, so I volunteered my time to sort out the books. It has really been a blessing because I get to see people and connect with them. Through all of that, I’m able to assist Hospice, which is such great satisfaction. This work gives me a lot of satisfaction.”
Lynette, who has only been a volunteer for at least three months, said, “My mom was in Hospice, and I have a soft spot for the organization because they treated her so well. Again, this is a way of serving.”
According to Pinky, who also volunteers at our charity shop at least twice a week, it gives them so much fulfilment, knowing their time is for a good cause.
Leonie, who shared similar sentiments, said she was now giving back through her volunteer work because life has been so good to her.
She mentioned that one thing in common among them is their willingness to sacrifice their personal time for the charity shop.
Stepping Stone remains committed to providing care and support, specifically palliative care, to people diagnosed with a life-threatening illness through our home-based care and in-patient unit services.
All volunteers go through a standard orientation process and remain supported and encouraged throughout their time with us.
It’s important to remember that volunteering can involve a broad range of tasks, so a willingness to get stuck in and adapt to what needs doing is an important quality to possess.
