In Alberton and surrounding areas, Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services has been a beacon of hope for those affected by life-limiting illnesses. Since the inception of our 5-star rated hospice, we have provided dignity care to approximately 3 800 patients and counselled at least 35 000 bereaved family members in our community.
With a critical need for palliative care in South Africa, this non-profit entity has been working tirelessly to provide compassionate care and support to those who need it most.
The stats are staggering: an estimated 45-50% of all deaths in South Africa could have benefited from palliative care. But our non-profit organisation is determined to make a difference. In 2024, we cared for 241 patients, registered 238 new patients, and conducted at least 636 home visits. But we’re not stopping there.

Impactful project
We are thrilled to announce that we have undertaken a wonderful endeavour that will surely improve the quality of life for those in and around Alberton.

“We are raising funds brick by brick to build a 14-bed adult hospice facility at 14 Glen Albyn Street, Raceview, in Alberton. With a total project cost of R6 million, we know it’s a daunting task, but we’re confident that together, we can make it happen. The proposed project aims to address community development, workforce enhancement, and healthcare improvement,” said Tersia Burger, Stepping Stone Hospice founder and CEO.
Our current facility at 15 Heidelberg Road, New Market Park, in Alberton, which only accommodates eight beds, is limited in capacity and has outdated infrastructure.
This hampers our ability to deliver the high-quality care that our patients deserve.
“The expansion will include the addition of private patient rooms, a family lounge, a quiet room, a nurses’ station, a utility room, a medicine room, and upgraded medical equipment. These enhancements will not only improve the quality of care but also create a more welcoming and supportive environment for patients and their loved ones,” Tersia said.
We are requesting funding or any form of support to cover the costs of construction, medical equipment, and initial operational expenses. This investment will enable us to serve more patients annually, reduce wait times, and provide a more holistic approach to hospice care.
“The impact of this project will be profound. We will be offering a sanctuary for those in their final stages of life, ensuring that they receive the compassionate care they need. The reality is that our hospice is a lifeline for many families in our community,” she explained.
Our building project is more than just a construction project – it’s a promise to our patients and families that we’ll do everything in our power to provide them with the care and support they deserve.

Tersia said: “Every donation, no matter how small, is a declaration that our community cares about the most vulnerable among us. I implore everyone to give what they can, and let’s work together to create a beacon of hope for our patients. We’re not just building walls and rooms, we’re building hope – and we need your help to make it happen”
