4 new beds for In-Patient Unit

Wives and partners of the Alberton Male Choir launched a Wheelbarrow project two months ago with the aim to raise enough funds to assist Stepping Stone Hospice in purchasing more beds for their now extended In-Patient Unit. A wheelbarrow filled with goodies to the value of R2500 was up for grabs and on Saturday May 2, 2105, the lucky draw took place at Meyersdal Spar with Diane Keys drawn as the lucky raffle ticket holder.

Rienie Venter, Alberton resident and cancer survivor, together with Stepping Stone volunteer Kia Bierman, spearheaded this project. On Wednesday 6 May 2015, they handed over a cheque to the value of R24 000 to Tersia Burger, CEO at Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services, the funds of which will now be used to purchase the new beds.

Management and staff of this, Alberton’s first and only hospice facility, were overwhelmed with joy. The In-patient Unit was recently extended by 100 sqm and now offers seven dignity rooms. Fundraising is on-going as the new rooms need to be furnished and medical equipment need to be purchased.

“It is a fact that one out of three families in modern times is affected by the impact of life-limiting illness, which in turn can explain the increasing demand for our services,” says Tersia. The hand-over of the cheque took place during a moving ceremony in the gardens of the Hospice with the Alberton Male Choir singing some of their beautiful songs.
