This is certainly the case for 73-year old Grace Crighton from Glenvista, who, together with her daughters and granddaughter, embarked on an exciting new venture from which so many people, who find themselves on the same recovery journey as Grace, can benefit.
Gracie’s Wig Boutique in Glenvista Extension, was born out of a need for a more understanding and caring experience especially for those suffering from hair loss as a result of cancer, alopecia and other related conditions.
Grace, a born and bred Albertonian, lived a happy, healthy and very active lifestyle up until April this year when she received the diagnosis – Stage 3 Endometrial Cancer. “I just couldn’t believe it, I exercised regularly, I considered myself a healthy person,” says Grace.
Since diagnosis, Grace underwent 28 radiation treatments followed by chemo therapy. The resulting hair loss led to her looking for a place where she would be comfortable fitting and buying a wig. “There was nothing in the South, we had to travel to the North to look for something,” her daughter Karen Douglas explains.
And so the penny dropped and between Grace, her daughters Karen and Tracey Sham and Tracey’s daughter Tanur, the idea was born to open an exclusive wig boutique in the south. “We wanted to make sure that we offer a range of services from wig fitting, styling and cutting by Tracey, who boasts 30 years hairdressing experience, permanent make-up, nails, and the latest head wear fashion,” Karen says.
The salon officially opened in the beginning of September this year and with their exclusive range of wigs, made in America, their CANSA approved head accessories, clip-in toppers and products to care for your wig, amongst so many other beautiful surprises in store for you, this salon is set to make its mark on the community.
“A life-threatening illness is a very personal and private journey,” says Grace. “We understand this and that’s why we created the environment where our clients will always feel respected, understood and their privacy intact.”
