Selling mostly 2nd hand goods ranging from furniture to teacups to children’s toys, this shop is paradise for those looking to find forgotten and sometimes “rejected” little treasures. As Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services is an independent non-profit organization, the shop serves as a valuable source of income, much needed funds to allow this organization to continue providing its service to the community.

“As we receive no government funding or assistance, we are continuously looking at ways of raising funds. The shop was born through the kindness of mostly family members of our patients who started donating 2nd hand items to us,” CEO Tersia Burger explains. “We set up a small shop in our marketing offices, however we run out of space very quickly.”

Various sponsors came on board – RTT donating two containers, Tsepang Electrical assisting with electrical connections, AC Industrial Cleaning donating paint and Irma Theron helping with the garden, to name just a few. Within two months of the containers arriving on the premises, the shop was ready to do business.

The name “Ububele” accurately reflects the purpose of the shop, Tersia explains. The meaning of Ububele is “kindness” and translated from Zulu to English it means “a deep awareness of another’s suffering and the desire to relieve the suffering”. She goes on to say that this is exactly what the purpose of the charity shop is, to ultimately raise funds so that hospice can continue providing appropriate and professional palliative care to those diagnosed with life limiting illnesses.
