The founder of this centre, Luisa Nazareth, passed away from cancer in September 2011 and according to the principal of the school, Lucilia Jacinto, they thought it fitting to make a small donation to our hospice during Breast Cancer.
Volunteer at Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market Park, Alberton, Dot van Eeden, has also been a member of the Lions Jhb South for the past 24 years, who in turn supports the Lighthouse on an ongoing basis. “I’m in as much awe of what this centre does for these children as what I am for the work Stepping Stone Hospice does in the community,” she says.
The Lighthouse Centre cares for 35 disabled children, 13 of whom stays at the centre during the week and only go home on weekends. Lions Jhb South has taken the centre on as a project with Teresa Magalhaes, also a member of the Jhb South Lions, heading up the feeding scheme at the centre. Thanks to her commitment and support from her fellow Lions, the children receive proper meals on a daily basis.
