The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 when he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”
As the great man himself said when Nelson Mandela Day was officially declared by the United Nations in 2009: “I would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation.”
Positive change for the better was the gift left to all of us by Nelson Mandela, and the gifts certainly flowed in abundance this year as companies and individuals pledged their 67 minutes to Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services.
From Donations of fresh fruit and vegetables to stocking our cupboards with everyday essentials, we extend our heartfelt thanks to AC Industrial Cleaning, Fusion Digital and Ocean Basket in Sunward Park and ultimately to our beloved Madiba for lighting the way.
Fusion digital
Fusion Digital, a large-format printing company based in Benrose, came to hear of the Stepping Stone Hospice Wish List, (essentials that the unit uses on a daily basis– from tea, coffee, milk and sugar, to air freshener, hand soap, tissues, disinfectant, candles and more) and decided to do their bit in celebration of Mandela Day. The company purchased every item on the list and paid the unit a visit on Friday, July 17, to deliver the parcels. Said Fusion Digital’s managing director, James Johnston: “As a resident of Alberton myself, I think that Stepping Stone Hospice plays a vital role in our community. We can all do our bit and we definitely plan to continue a relationship with Stepping Stone Hospice going forward.”
Ocean Basket
Bev Botha, owner of Ocean Basket in Sunward Park and wife of the late Dean Botha, surprised staff at our In-Patient Unit on Monday when she delivered meals for all staff on duty. Bev, here with Tersia Burger (left) and Lizzie Khoza and Bonnie, said she wanted to do this partly as her 67 Mandela Minutes outreach and partly as a thank you to Stepping Stone Hospice for the love, dedication and caring manner in which Dean was treated in his last days at our hospice. Thank you Bev, we remember Dean with much love. And yes, the food was delicious
AC industrial Cleaning
Mandela Day at Stepping Stone Hospice – Johnny Banda and Solomon Banda from AC Industrial Cleaning brought a bakkie full of vegetables and fruit to our In-Patient Unit. Here to thank them is CEO, Tersia Burger.
