Each year, thousands of cyclists register to compete in this iconic Joburg event, the only cycling event in the world that has placed such significance on making a difference and to “ride for a purpose.” Under the “Ride for a Purpose” banner, no less than R14.3 million was raised in 2014 for charities throughout South Africa. Stepping Stone Hospice ended 5th in the Top 10 Charity Groups (out of 190 groups) and got 2nd position in the Top 20 Individual Fundraisers (Red Jersey)!
With Absa again on board as a major sponsor for the Stepping Stone Hospice Cycling Team, it enables the team to go for a record-breaking fundraiser this year. Funds raised last year were used to extent the existing In-Patient Unit with 100 sqm and therefore offer eight dignity rooms as opposed to the five of last year.
Cyclists are encouraged to register before the closing date, 31 August 2015, and to choose Stepping Stone Hospice as their charity to ride for. Absa Marketing & Corporate Relations sponsors the cycling kits for the team whilst Barclays undertook to match fund all funds raised by the Absa cyclists on the team.
Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services is an independent community driven organization and the first ever service of its kind in the Greater Alberton area of Ekurhuleni. It provides appropriate professional palliative care for people diagnosed with life limiting illnesses as well as support for their families.
CEO Tersia Burger says funds raised with this year’s event will be earmarked towards the development of a palliative care training centre where medical staff will be trained in the specialized field of palliative care. “Our aim is to become an HPCA accredited training centre.”
