Hospice cyclist receives personalised cycling shirt

Anatomic Sportswear on Friday handed over a personalised cycling kit valued at R4000 to Stepping Stone Hospice cyclist, Nick Erasmus, who as an individual, raised the most funds for the hospice’s charity cycling team in the 2019 Discovery 947 Ride Joburg.

Nick, member of the Albion Wheelers Club, raised R17 300 towards the overall R204 000 raised by the Stepping Stone Hospice Charity Cycling team in the race that took place on November 17, 2019. “I’m over the moon with this shirt, I designed it with some very special people in mind,” Nick explains. The colours were my mom’s favourite colours and the green ribbon on the sleeve is in her memory.” Nicks’ mom, Phillipa Erasmus, passed away at Stepping Stone Hospice in July 2018.

The blue ribbon on the other sleeve is in memory of Nick’s father, who survived cancer twice and the pink ribbon on the shirt is to celebrate his wife, Belinda’s journey with breast cancer, a journey that is now complete with Belinda in remission.

The number 14 on the shirt, Nick says, indicates the number of 947 races he has completed and the names on the back of the shirt belong to those who sponsored him in the 2019 race. Nick intends to cycle with the shirt on in the upcoming Argus race. After that, he says, “the shirt will be framed and displayed in a special space in our home.”

The sponsorship of the shirt was made possible through Anatomic Sportswear and the involvement of Sinead Wannenburg who gave of her time and effort in honour of her mom who passed away at Stepping Stone Hospice.

Since entering their first team back in 2014, Stepping Stone Hospice cyclists have raised over R3.3 million, funds used towards the extension of their In-Patient Unit, which was a 3-ward unit in 2013, extended to a 5 ward in 2015 and then to the current 8-ward unit!

The 2019 funds will be used towards the development of a practical training centre of their Centre for Palliative Learning.
