Demand for their services are on the increase, leading to Stepping Stone now launching a massive fundraising project to extend the existing In-Patient Unit in New Market Park. The original building, a modular prefab structure, was opened on October 9, 2013 and at the time had only three wards. Within
a year the building was extended to five wards and in 2015 to eight wards.
Further extensions need to be done, but in the form of a brick building and expanding to 12 rooms. To quote CEO Tersia Burger: “Our unit currently has eight wards, two of which can cater for long term patients. However, we want to add on family rooms, in other words, wards that can cater for a family member to sleep over with his/her beloved one, especially in cases where the patients are very young”.
Plans drawn up by SCS Architects for a 546 sqm brick building as an extension onto the existing building, are in the process of being approved. The appointed building contractor, Coenie Strydom from Coenbuild, are busy with the cost estimates. It is however estimated that just over R3 million will be needed for the project and to that end, the “Help us Build, Brick by Brick” will be launched at an information evening on the 7th July at Reading Country Club.
The local newspaper, Alberton Record, has come on board sponsoring four full pages to allow for coverage for sponsors. A huge signboard has been erected on the fence of hospice facing the New Market Mall intersection, and this too allow for publicity for sponsors.
